national identification card Voter Eligibility Verification Act 12 February 1998 1998 Ron Paul 10:6 In order to protect the privacy rights of America’s citizens, I plan to soon introduce the Privacy Protection Act, which will forbid the use of the Social Security number for any purpose other than for the administration of the Social Security system. I would urge my colleagues to support this bill when introduced and vote against the Voter Eligibility Act. It is time for Congress to protect the Constitutional rights of all Americans and stop using the Social Security number as a de facto national identification card. national identification card Social Security Numbers And Student Loans 29 April 1998 1998 Ron Paul 41:3 The American people have become very worried about how often the Social Security number is being used as a national identification number, and we are working quickly toward a time where we have a national identification card. We certainly have abused the Social Security number as being the number. It was never intended that way. That is not what was intended when the Social Security was started that this number would be a universal number for everything. national identification card Amendment Number 3 Offered By Mr. Paul 29 April 1998 1998 Ron Paul 42:6 The Privacy Act concerns were expressed through this legislation in 1974 stating that, yes, we have overstepped our bounds, there is too much intrusiveness, and we are moving in the direction of a national identification card, something that is unknown and should be unheard of in a free society. national identification card National Identification Card Bad Idea For America 23 June 1999 1999 Ron Paul 64:1 Mr. PAUL. Mr. Speaker, the American people strongly oppose the instituting of a national identification card. The authority was given for a national I.D. card in 1996. I have been working very hard to try to repeal this authority. national identification card Medical Privacy Amendment June 13, 2000 2000 Ron Paul 41:8 The American people have spoken out strongly in recent years about their invasion of privacy. There was a proposal to implement a know-your-customer bank regulations. These were soundly rejected by the people, and I think that this same sentiment applies to the medical data bank. Also, efforts to establish a national identification card for the American people has not met with a great deal of acceptance with the American people. national identification card Providing For Consideration Of H.R. 5005, Homeland Security Act Of 2002 25 July 2002 2002 Ron Paul 79:7 I also introduced four amendments to the bill itself, including those that would prohibit a national identification card, that would prohibit the secretary of this new department from moving money to other agencies and departments without congressional oversight, that would deny student visas to nationals of Saudi Arabia, and that would deny student and diversity visas to nationals from terrorist-sponsoring countries. All of these amendments, which would have addressed some of the real issues of our security, were rejected. They were not even allowed onto the floor for a debate. This is yet more evidence of the failure of this process. national identification card HR 418- A National ID Bill Masquerading as Immigration Reform February 9, 2005 2005 Ron Paul 19:10 What will all of this mean for us? When this new program is implemented, every time we are required to show our driver’s license we will, in fact, be showing a national identification card. We will be handing over a card that includes our personal and likely biometric information, information which is connected to a national and international database. national identification card Integrity of Social Security Number must be maintained 20 July 1998 Texas Straight Talk 20 July 1998 verse 6 ... Cached While I am proud to be the author of the Freedom and Privacy Restoration Act, which would stop a national identification card from taking effect, we need to be aware that those wanting to give government power to track us from cradle to grave already have the Social Security Number as their tool of choice. It is for this reason that several months ago I introduced the Privacy Protection Act, H.R. 3261. national identification card Privacy tops agenda 09 November 1998 Texas Straight Talk 09 November 1998 verse 6 ... Cached From a national database containing the private medical history of every American to a national identification card and granting broad new authorities to the FBI in wiretapping, many on both sides of the political aisle have been working to erode our tradition of privacy. national identification card This Year's Successes 22 November 1999 Texas Straight Talk 22 November 1999 verse 7 ... Cached One other area in which we found some legislative success deals with the plan for a National Identification Card. A 1996 bill required states to conform their issuance of driver's licenses to federal standards. Because the mandate would essentially be put into effect next year, this was our last chance to derail this heinous policy. national identification card This Year's Successes 22 November 1999 Texas Straight Talk 22 November 1999 verse 8 ... Cached Fortunately, within this year's transportation appropriations bill we were indeed successful in stopping this plan dead in its tracks. With the help of Senator Shelby, Congressman Frank Wolf and others, we repealed the mandate and ended the National Identification Card. national identification card Taking the Next Step 29 November 1999 Texas Straight Talk 29 November 1999 verse 5 ... Cached Last week I mentioned the success we had with our efforts to derail the proposed "Know Your Customer" regulation and to end the national identification card scheme, as well as our efforts to curtail the activities of runaway agencies like the US Postal Service and the Selective Service Agency. national identification card Taking the Next Step 29 November 1999 Texas Straight Talk 29 November 1999 verse 6 ... Cached In each of these areas I introduced legislation, and to follow up on our victories in the National Identification Card and "Know Your Customer" battles, I now have bills, pending in committee, which would take the next step on these two topics. My bill to restrict usage of the Social Security number is the next logical step in our battle against federal identifiers. And, my bill to repeal the Bank Secrecy Act would protect us from further attempts at regulations like "Know Your Customer." national identification card Reject the National ID Card 06 September 2004 Texas Straight Talk 06 September 2004 verse 2 ... Cached Washington politicians are once again seriously considering imposing a national identification card - and it may well become law before the end of the 108th Congress. The much-hailed 9/11 Commission report released in July recommends a federal identification card and, worse, a "larger network of screening points" inside the United States. Does this mean we are to have "screening points" inside our country where American citizens will be required to "show their papers" to government officials? It certainly sounds that way! national identification card Reject the National ID Card 06 September 2004 Texas Straight Talk 06 September 2004 verse 4 ... Cached Congress has embraced the 9/11 Commission report uncritically since its release in July. Now Congress is rushing to write each 9/11 Commission recommendation into law before the November election. In the same way Congress rushed to pass the PATRIOT Act after the September 11 attacks to be seen "doing something," it looks like Congress is about to make the same mistake again of rushing to pass liberty-destroying legislation without stopping to consider the consequences. Because it is so controversial, we may see legislation mandating a national identification card with biometric identifiers hidden in bills implementing 9/11 Commission recommendations. We have seen this technique used in the past on controversial measures. national identification card Reject the National ID Card 06 September 2004 Texas Straight Talk 06 September 2004 verse 5 ... Cached A national identification card, in whatever form it may take, will allow the federal government to inappropriately monitor the movements and transactions of every American. History shows that governments inevitably use the power to monitor the actions of people in harmful ways. Claims that the government will protect the privacy of Americans when implementing a national identification card ring hollow. We would do well to remember what happened with the Social Security number. It was introduced with solemn restrictions on how it could be used, but it has become a de facto national identifier. national identification card Reject the National ID Card 06 September 2004 Texas Straight Talk 06 September 2004 verse 8 ... Cached We must take effective measures to protect ourselves from a terrorist attack. That does not mean rushing to embrace legislation that in the long run will do little to stop terrorism, but will do a great deal to undermine the very way of life we should be protecting. Just as we must not allow terrorists to threaten our lives, we must not allow government to threaten our liberties. We should reject the notion of a national identification card. national identification card The National ID Trojan Horse 14 February 2005 Texas Straight Talk 14 February 2005 verse 8 ... Cached What will this mean for us? When this new program is implemented, every time we are required to show our drivers’ license we will, in fact, be showing a national identification card. We will be handing over a card that includes our personal and likely biometric information, information which is connected to a national and international database. This will further degrade our precious privacy, which is the hallmark of a civilized society. As Ayn Rand said, the “Savage’s whole existence is public.” Texas Straight Talk from 20 December 1996 to 23 June 2008 (573 editions) are included in this Concordance. Texas Straight Talk after 23 June 2008 is in blog form on Rep. Pauls Congressional website and is not included in this Concordance. Remember, not everything in the concordance is Ron Pauls words. Some things he quoted, and he added some newspaper and magazine articles to the Congressional Record. Check the original speech to see. |
